You're an aspiring salesman, and the first task your interviewer told you to do is to sell a pencil/pen. You take a look at the one interviewing you, and you take a look at the object. What will you do?
Last time, we dug deeper from a Quora question - let's do it again with this question-and-answer:
Read John Kaufman's answer to What are some of the best responses to "Sell me this pen/pencil" in a job interview? on Quora
If you noticed, the "pen" isn't just a pen - it could be a stapler, a scissor, so on and so forth - but what mattered in the answer posted is that good salesmen know what they're selling, but asks their customers first on their needs.
Filipinos are much more shy nowadays that they'll go online to check the reviews and how-tos before going to the place itself and ask the thing directly. But, in some cases, their research might have its faults and they end up with the wrong product still. This is the bright time for salespeople to explain the product well.
Considering the lesson in the answer, let's get back to the question. How will you sell a pen to a potential customer? If you have any other ideas aside from the answer posted above, let us know in the comments section.

It is 2017 and the event
management industry is starting the machine in churning different events this
year.
Unlike the previous years a
lot of changes are taking place. However, there are also some fundamental
truths that are here to stay.
As part of the industry,
here is my wish list:
1.
Strong and Free WIFI
Technology professionals and
experts will continue to create great products that will alter the event
management industry. But this innovation will be useless if we will continue to
have poor WIFI connectivity.
And if ever, a strong WIFI
is provided this year, the next is that it should be free.
A lot of venues here in the
Philippines are charging exorbitant fees that will scare you to death and
occupy a big chunk in your cost .
So this year, it is my hope
that a strong and free WIFI become a commonplace in event venues.
2.
Lower Venue Rentals
It may be a wishful thinking,
but a lot of event venues like hotels and expo venues are sprouting in the
country, in particular in Metro Manila, competition is supposed to make the
price go down right? But no, main venues are increasing their rental rates.
An increased rental rate and
clients unwilling to increase their budget to expos, conferences and event
participation is a challenge to all event organizers and managers like me.
So hoping that the law of
supply and demand takes over or new constructed venues and hotel can provide
the same services and quality the current venues provide albeit the lower rental price.
3.
Professional Supplier
Partners
Event managers and
organizers provide a lot of opportunities for suppliers. But in some cases, there
are suppliers that fail the expectations of the event managers, this in turn,
affect the event manager’s relationship with the clients. To cut the long story
short, this results to client loss, every client lost is lost opportunity for
suppliers.
This year, it is my fervent
wish to have professional supplier partners that will ensure that my client
event objectives are achieved and that they share my desire to create every
event project successful.
4.
Passionate Event
Professionals
The event is about people. The
success of the event is about passionate people coming together to achieve
things that look impossible possible. At the same time, working long hours is
part of it. As they say, while most are sleeping, event professionals are working.
This is not an 8am-5pm job a fact that all event professionals must accept.
Having said this, I am
looking forward to meeting more event professionals that I can have as partners
in creating more memorable and successful events.
And yes, Millennials are
included in this wish.
It is my hope that the
government will increase their support to local MICE event managers and
organizers.
The increasing presence of
foreign competition in the country is a big challenge for all MICE event
managers and organizers.
The local companies can
compete with these giants if there is government support. One big reason is that
the foreign companies have bigger capitalization compared to local event
organizers and managers.
Local MICE event organizers
and managers can survive and face the competition head-on if the government
will provide incentives and support (financial and non-financial).
The year 2017 is an exciting
and promising year, the wish list that I have is by no means exhaustive.
However, I strongly believe if this list is granted, the year 2017 will be a
blockbuster not only for me, but for other event managers and organizers as
well.

...and not the other way around - especially in elevator pitches.
We stumbled upon this question on Quora, where someone asks the best way to shut down a sales call quick.
Read Craig McClarren's answer to What is the best way to quickly end a sales call? "I'm not interested, but thank you," rarely works, and I'd prefer not to be rude if possible. on Quora
The one who answered the question ended up getting annoyed, and resorted to entertaining himself by entertaining the telemarketer and not the other way around.
For the telemarketer, we understand that it's hard to haggle with people who, chances are, shut themselves up whenever there's an offer. For the customer, it's bothersome most of the time.
We can apply the same context to the elevator pitch, where you get to introduce your product or service to them in a short span of time. You'll know from their faces or emotions that they're not interested.
One of the things that can attract their attention is to actually entertain them, as plain words are not enough. Here are the usual tips in entertaining the potential customer:
- Show them something. Flyers, are effective: It saves time to explain things, it contains the things the people need to know, and they can easily share it.
- Try a different approach. "It's not what you say, it's how you say it." This phrase has been said and done in marketing, customer experience, so on and so forth. Your idea might be great, but it can be better with a different approach.
- Generate a happy vibe. Before you get in touch with your potential contact, make sure that you have a positive vibe running within you - so much that it can be passed to your contact, which might increase the possibility of them getting back to you.
With the right tools and a positive attitude, you are now ready to entertain your customers. Just so you know, in case you persist to those specific targets and they just won't give back, it's time to look for another set - you don't need to keep looking at the usual doors when there's a million of them.

Sales is the lifeblood of the organization. No sales mean the death of the organization. This is the reason why sales department or sales groups of organizations need to be equipped.
By making them competent and at par with the ASEAN neighbors, organizations can compete and be ahead with the competition.
However, it is not enough to be trained, it is also important to be trained by an expert that don’t only transfer the skills needed for the sales team to be successful, but more so, the trainer should also be inspiring.

The year 2016 showed a lot of great upheavals in the world
and the Philippine society. The business event management industry is not
spared.
The social media and the digital world explosion is evident that
things will never be the same.
Here are some of the trends that we will have to watch this
coming 2017 in the business event management industry.
1. Emphasis
on Social Media Promotions
The reach and the affordability of the social media platform
allowed it to be the top priority of event management professionals in
promoting their events.
High budget or low budget, it will not matter because social
media is a great equalizer. Social media will further allow event management
professionals and event producers to talk to their target market and reach more
of them.
2. Technology
for Greater Engagement and Entertainment
Amidst the technological breakthroughs, there are things
that remain constant. This is the desire and need of the audience and attendees
to be engaged and entertained.
In branding, the brand is the king and event is the queen.
Event management professionals and corporate event planners always aspire to
give the brand to the audience and let them experience it first hand.
This year, technology will further enhance this experience
and push the boundaries in creating unique entertainment and deeper engagement.
3. Offline
Interactions become paramount
Humans will be humans. We love to talk and be given an arena
where we can freely talk and get to know each other.
Some conferences and expos took greater time and effort to
create such an arena. Bringing back the magic that was lost or covered by heaps of
technology and innovation that is the powerful magic of human interaction.
We will see more of this, and event management professionals
that are able to create more of this in their events will have greater success.
4. Green
takes center stage
The clamor for responsible management of events by taking
into bigger consideration the care of Mother Nature will bring into life more
earth friendly event products, processes and systems.
Clients will put more emphasis on them and give this aspect
more gravity in their decision-making.
We will see more innovations on this aspect in the event
management industry.
5. New
Industry Expos and Conferences will be Created
The age of disruption will be pretty obvious in the event
management industry as we are treated with new concepts in expos and
conferences that we never thought possible.
This new industry expo and conferences are great indicators
of how constant are changing and how the use of new knowledge is the key to being
successful in this exciting industry.
