It’s 2014 and we are almost
in the middle of the first month. But
the recent developments in our country and abroad is shaping-up in making this
year one of the exciting year of expos and trade fairs.
Expo, Trade Fairs or
exhibition as others are familiar in calling this platform is still…tadah! - one of the preferred tools in promoting
products and services.
We go back to the reasons
why?
1.
Committed Visitors and Buyers
Visitors and buyers that go
to expo are committed in making a business to exhibitors or exploring the
product and service offerings of the particular event. As the saying goes, the
have already given their time and effort so might as well maximize it.
2.
Best Networking Venue
This is the place to go if
you are looking for new business ventures and partners. In the recent, Consumer
Electronic Show (CES) 2014, the CNN featured Fifty Cents and he mentioned that
he is looking for a company where he can invest his money. This is the same
scenario here in our country; investors go to expo to look for opportunities.
In addition, companies
promoting inside the expo are already the best target to network with.
3.
Social Media Exploded Expo and Events Growth
The advent of social media
makes expo and events for that matter gave expo an incendiary character. People
can now get hold where to go because of social media. This is one of the best things
that ever happened to event organizers and event managers.
Expo and events on this era is
now reloaded and it is not in a form of a gun but cannon – a big explosion that
benefits a larger market and users of this platform.

MICECON 2013 meets and exceeds the expectations of
delegates. The MICECON 2013 held last March 6-9,2013 at SMX Lanang, Davao City
showed the readiness of the province and Mindanao to host an important event in
the tourism and MICE industry.
The development of Davao’s hotels, venues, and its strong
safety and security management are keys in making its bid to be one of the
country’s MICE hub. Add the strong people skills and innate hospitality of
Davaoenos MICECON 2013 will be one of the benchmarks in future MICECON’s.
No less than, President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is the
keynote speaker of the conference. It is the first time that the President of
the Philippines addressed the delegates of MICECON. This signals how important
tourism is as one of the key drivers in our economy.
The president signed the Republic Act 10376 as part of the
opening rites. RA 10376 grants tax exemptions to international carriers if
their countries do the same for those of the Philippines. This new law is
expected to significantly increase the number of planes of international
airlines that bring tourists to the Philippines and enable the country’s
tourism industry to hit its target of 10 million foreign visitor arrivals by
2016.
One of the favourite speakers that inspired the delegates is
Matec Villanueva, Chairman and CEO of Publicis Manila. She wowed the crowd by
giving insights that connect to the heart of the audience. One of her famous
teaching in the event is “Your Brand Ambition must be directly proportional to
your budget”.
Another speaker that energized the crowd is Cheryl
Cecchetto, Founder and President, Sequoia Productions, USA. Her storytelling
and nuggets of wisdom are like magnets that drew the crowd to her.
Two of her
famous tips are: Use Humour as a Trick and Realize the Power of Dream.
Other speakers also delivered what was expected of them. So
much information and take home actionable knowledge were shared by the
speakers.
MICECON is the biggest gathering of local and foreign
delegates, including top executives and representatives of resorts, hotels,
travel and tour companies, airlines, professional congress organizers, the
academe, local and national tourism government offices, and many related MICE
industry suppliers.
The delegates were treated by sumptuous meal from sponsoring
hotels like Waterfront Hotel, Marco Polo Hotel, Royal Mandaya Hotel, Apo Hotel
and Inland Rose Hotel.
Besides this, during the MICE Marketplace, there was a
noticeable increase of buyers and sellers that participated in the event.
Next year’s MICECON will be held in Clark Freeport Zone,
Pampanga.

Two days to go before Davao
becomes the hub where tourism industry players all over the country gather.
I am talking about the
upcoming MICECON 2013, March 6-9, 2013, SMX Lanang, Davao City – the third year
this event will be held. So far, this is one of the most important events in
the tourism industry, in particular to the MICE Industry.
Even if MICE is a
commonplace word all over Asia Pacific, in the country only few people know and
understand what MICE is all about.
For newbies, here are 5
things that you can look forward to in MICECON 2013:
1.
Pre-Conference Activities
This one is a must
attend for newbies. This year they are calling the Pre-Conference Activities
the Davao Adventure Challenge - it
is an activity where intellectual
and physical capabilities are a must. Best of all, you learn tourism spots in
Davao while playing the game.
2. The Daily Dress Motif
One thing you will be
amazed in this event is the daily dress motif that delegates have to wear.
This makes the event colourful, and why not this is a tourism event where glitz
and glamour is the order of the day.
This MICECON 2013 the following thematic
dress are required: 1st day: Galactic Explosion (Silver, Gold,
Bronze fabric), 2nd day: Convergence (Mosaic or splash of colors), and
3rd day: Breaking Borders (All White Business Attire).
3.
Hotel Tours and Food
Every
lunch and special activities are being sponsored by hotels. Delegates get to
enjoy the silent competition among sponsoring hotels as they strive to show
their best foot forward in courting the MICE players. And yes, delegates are
brought to the hotels sponsoring the meals.
4.
The Conference Speakers
All speakers are
experts and practitioners. The insights you can generate can propel you to
start your own ideation on what action to take as a MICE player. Expect a lot
of Wow and Aha moments while listening to these speakers.
Every MICECON, this
is the best thing that I enjoy as a MICE Delegate. I am very sure you will too.
5.
New Friends and Business Partners
All
delegates are MICE and Tourism players - I am very sure you will find a lot of
companies and individuals that will complement your existing business.
This
is why you should be in the event. This is the reason why MICECON or other
conferences are important. The face-to-face contact enables you to establish
relationships. As M.R. Covey espoused, “you
can have business in the speed of trust”.
MICECON
is one of those events that act as a conduit to allow you to have synergy with
other MICE and tourism players.
Lastly,
if you see me there or any Exlinkers taking part in the event, you may approach
me or us. We love to explore possibilities. Onwards MICE Philippines!

This is like poetry where the rhythm hypnotizes you |
Banaue is part of the Philippines Mountain Province or Cordillera. The trip here if your starting point is Metro Manila is around 9 hours to 12 hours, depending on the route you take and transportation that you will use. But the best route to take is the Manila-NLEX-SCTEX-Cabanatuan City-Lagawe - Banaue route.
We went there this week with the purpose of having a vacation but the MICE professional blood in me wanted to discover the potential of the area as a MICE destination.
We went there using a private vehicle. We started to depart Manila at around 12:00nn and arrived there around 10:30pm. The journey is relaxing but a word of caution you should be careful when navigating Nueva Viscaya, Bagabag, Lagawe and Banaue roads. We travelled this area during the night and since the roads are part of the mountain areas extreme caution is necessary.
![]() |
Banaue Hotel perched at the side of the mountain |
The Banaue Hotel and Youth Hostel
This hotel is a government operated hotel under TIEZA. It is the biggest hotel in Banaue, Ifugao with ample parking space. When we arrived another infrastructure is being built I hope the purpose of that is for additional rooms.
The lobby hall can accommodate 200 people in classroom set-up. Also, there is an area that is good for 100 people classroom set-up in the covered rooftop area where you can see a great view of the mountains and rice terraces.
A room with a view
The best thing about the hotel is that all rooms have a view of the mountains and small rice terraces. Staying in your room is an experience itself that is very relaxing and brings you closer to nature.
![]() |
A Souvenir Photo of being in the Rice Terraces is a great memory for MICE Delegates that they will definitely treasure |
Eco Travel as an Incentive Travel
After the meetings or conventions, participating delegates can visit different interesting places in Banaue. Of course, first and foremost will be the UNESCO declared heritage site the Banaue Rice Terraces or a visit to Sagada.
It was recorded that our ancestors took 2,000 years to build the famous rice terraces.
The Trip to the Mountains is Awesome
If the attending delegates wish to visit a tourist spots, the journey going to the tourist spots is exhilarating. Travel the local jeeps or vans at the side of the mountain where sometimes you are 2,000 to 4,000 ft.above sea level. In going to Sagada before you reach Bontoc you will pass Mt. Polis a small community that is located at one of the highest point in the area. The clouds swirl around the community as fog. It is like reaching the heavens.
The Gentle People of the Mountain Province
The best element of having your MICE event in Banaue is the people. They are gentle, always smiling and easy to talk with. Of course, they know how to speak in English.
But if you want to know the history of the area, as an enriching bonus, there are licensed tour guides that can tell you interesting stories about the place. I recommend Jun Taguinay, a DOT licensed tour guide who is well versed about the history of his people.

See great woodcarving at Banaue |
Banaue – A great MICE place you wanted to go back again and again
Associations and Companies can provide a great experience to its members if they use Banaue as their next MICE destination. It is an Eco experience that will always be on the top list of any tourists or MICE delegates if ever a voting or survey is conducted.

MICE 101 is slated this coming March 28,2012 at SMX Convention Center. This is just a pocket size event where an attendee can intimately interact with the MICE Industry Experts. The absence of MICECON this year is a big reason why one who is a MICE professional should able the opportunity to be present in this event.
There are 3 compelling reasons why you should attend MICE 101.
1. Updated and Practical Learnings
The speakers are all battle tested MICE players. They have gained knowledge and experience that we can all benefit from just listening to their stories.
They will also try to make sense of the existing theories and beliefs in MICE. You will never know which one of those theories in the books will get outdated or debunked by our panel of experts.
2. Help You Formulate Your Own MICE Strategies
DOT will discuss and unveil their MICE strategies vis-a-vis the "It's More Fun in the Philippines" Campaign. If you are a travel and tour company, event organizer, venue, hotel and other related supplier you should be present when DOT reveals the MICE direction.
For one, it will make your business strategies aligned with the government. This alignment might prove to be the success of your business for years to come.
3. Gain and Expand Network
There is a saying "if you want to be one, you got to know them". The event will provide you ample and intimate time to network with MICE players. This will give you an edge in the years to come because these new network might prove to be helpful in some of your business deals in the future.
Again, MICE 101 is an exciting event to be in amidst a growing interest and potential that the MICE Industry offers you can never go wrong by attending this event.

Meetings, Incentive, Conventions, and Exhibition (MICE)
Industry is a big industry outside of the country. In fact, in Australia it is
bigger than other industries like mining. It only proves that tourism has a big
potential in stirring up the economy. I guess there is no argument to this
conclusion. The problem is doing the necessary actions to really make Tourism,
and MICE as part of it, reach its potential.
Here are the top 5 reasons why MICE Industry must be
bolstered by the government:
1. MICE
has a multiplier effect
An average MICE attendees will spend 6x compared to a
typical tourist. So, if for example, a backpacker tourist spends $100, our MICE
tourist will spend $600 during his stay. This is a huge contribution that our
government officials must realize.
2.
MICE
is more about Business and Trade
A company or an association that gather for a meeting in
a particular country always have attending members that will look for business
opportunities. In fact, it is not rocket science but a simple observation because
International attendees in a convention and exhibition have higher purchasing
capacity as compared to FIT (Free Independent Traveler) tourists.
Of course there are exceptions to the rules, if we are to
discuss those who are into the leisure and high end travel but that is another point for discussion. In general, MICE has higher value that FIT.
This is the reason that JAPAN has a promotional display
ad that I saw in TTG that has a statement that goes like this” Thank You Very
Much for Putting MICE in Japan”
International Congress & Convention
Association (ICCA) statistics show, that a
Total of 400,000 conferences and exhibitions
are held worldwide every year at the total outlay of US$280 billion. The Global
Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) points out that as annual MICE
industry output value has already reached US$1.16 trillion (including US$400
billion for conferences and US$760 billion for exhibitions), MICE could be
counted on to bring enormous economic benefit to the countries and cities that
host them. [Department of Investment Services, Ministry of Economic Affairs,
Taiwan].
3.
MICE
is a platform for Transfer of Knowledge and Technology
The country that is able to secure an International
Convention or Exhibition is indeed lucky. It will not only benefit in terms of
economic value but the knowledge and technology transfer that International
speakers, participants or exhibitors bring is immense.
I remember a story by one of my trainer in Singapore
where I took up a MICE Master class; she said she has a client doctor who
spends a lot of money in order to win a particular medical event. She asks why go
for it considering the financial risks. The doctor just smiled and told her
that financial risks is nothing compared to the knowledge and technology
transfer that can be gained by the local medical practitioners in the country
in that particular field.
4.
MICE
benefits multiple industry suppliers
A conference or exhibition that is International in
nature involves Hotels, Airplanes, Buses, Travel and Tour Operators, Production
Houses, Exhibition Venues, Catering, Corporate Giveaways, Entertainment,
Freight Forwarders, Booth Suppliers and Designers and the lists goes on.
This is how MICE create a snowball effect to the economy
and industry related to it. In this industry the players compete but
collaborate in different projects. In MICE, an entity cannot do it alone and
needs a lot partners in order to make a MICE event a success.
5. MICE
provides positive Image to the country
Every bid won by a local organizer or association makes
me proud because I know it will have a positive effect that will redound to our
country.
I know that if a MICE event is staged well the
international visitors that participated will tell their experiences to their
countrymen and the cycle starts all over. Another MICE event will again be
staged in the country, all because of the past successes fellow local
organizers or associations performed.
This is a simple case of word-of-mouth marketing or
creating a purple cow in the midst of all the white cows.
A country that has a positive international image will
attract investors and a lot of opportunities that will be felt by the people
that comprise that particular country. It is also a source of pride for the
people of that country.
One example, maybe ambitious, what will you feel if we
won the bid for the Olympics?
I hear gasps and revelries and emotions that you can only
see from a person that won a lotto draw. Precisely, that is the feeling that a
won MICE bid gives to the country and the people that loves the country.
MICE have all the good reasons that our country and
government must realize and pursue relentlessly.

The development in the region is forcing the country to be more open and

the lowering of the travel tax, the imminent transfer of International flights

Clark where another International Airport that can accept a bigger number of
tourists are just some of the numerous good news for the tourism industry.
