We, Event Management Professionals, have a hard time in most of our events.
Not because we do not know what we are doing but because it is the nature of events. There are unexpected things that are bound to happen.
When the worst things happen, some of our colleagues blew their top and lost control of steering the event in the right direction.
This is a disaster!
But if you are calm because of your maturity and experience in the event management profession, you will be able to handle the pressure.
Murphy's Law is our best friend ( you heard it correctly!).
Murphy's Law allows you to prepare for different scenarios. It also allows you to manage and calibrate your emotions.
The key is to manage your emotions. If you can, when things go awry, you will not be part of the problem, but a solution provider.
Life and events are very much the same. When things are going bad, you do not need to aggravate it further. You need to plug the hole and remove the pain points.
As event management professionals, we should always be failing forward and proactive in handling an exciting but challenging event in our hands.

Being in the event management industry is no walk in the park. This is aggravated by the current pandemic. The clients are expecting a lot from you. You cannot let them down. It runs in your territory.
You do a lot of pre-event preparations just to ensure that you execute to the littlest details the requirements of the event. But there are moments that Murphy's Law is at work. When this situation takes place, instead of being paralyzed, you are bound to act.
This is where you separate the losers from the winners. Those who have a fixed mindset blame the glitches and errors on other people.
In these moments of difficulty, you need to rack your brain and have the presence of mind to be part of the solution. You are paid to offer a remedy to a pain point.
The thin line of coming up with a solution versus giving up is staring at your face. A wrong decision makes you lose a client. The right decision or solution gives you a client that will be forever thankful and a source of limitless income.
The main takeaway of these powerful words of Henry Ford for event professionals like you - always keep moving forward and always keep finding solutions to the numerous challenges that the exciting world of the events management industry brings.

This is the most common question that keeps all event organizers awake at night. A question that is hard to fathom. Initially, there are positive signs that 2021 will re-establish the industry. But recent news points otherwise.
The news that there is a new Covid-19 strain and the World Health Organization declaring that are expecting another big wave of infection does not augur well going into the future.
Physical Events May Have To Wait for a Little Longer
The news about the pandemic may dampen the revitalization of the physical events. However, online event is another matter.
According to Forbes Magazine, online events were valued at close to $78 billion, and are expected to grow at 23.2 percent annually from 2020 to 2027.
This projection points to the explosion of online events in the country as we mirror the global market. Moving forward, it is safe to say that this is the new battleground of the events management organizers in the Philippines.
As a business management organizer, we saw that our clients last year showed great enthusiasm for online events. Entering 2021 where they have all adjusted and are now well acquainted with the technology they saw the value of continuing with this platform and strategy.
Urban Users and Online Events
A recent study of Statista showed that there are more urban users of the internet, 56% all over the Philippines and 67% in the National Capital Region.
This will further increase as the safety condition is not progressing as we are expecting. This would also mean that this is the pie where all of the brands and associations will focus their energy to capture and engage.
Traffic in Metro Manila: A Good Sign
Traffic pre-Covid days is bad in Metro Manila and other parts of the country. But when the pandemic struck it disappeared. I hate to say it but seeing that traffic is slowly coming back, and people are traveling to nearby provinces are good signs.
In Summary
It will be slow progress in the first and second quarter in terms of physical events but I will not be surprised if we can feel vibrancy at the tail-end of 2021.
In addition, online events are here to stay and the market will continue to grow - we are already digitally transformed and there is no turning back.

There are lots of events in the country covering spectra such as entertainment (concerts and contests, etc) and business (trade fairs and exhibitions, etc.), but there's one common ground for any kind of event: These may change all of a sudden.
We have here Bruce, who is an example of an event organizer. He, along with his team, has been formulating the program for their event as far as a year before the exact date. However, there are many adjustments that they have to take note of. These may include last-minute cancellations for guests, contests and activities, rescheduling of program activities, so on and so forth.
Bruce manages a concert that is long-awaited by enthusiasts of smooth jazz, especially those of the overseas guest/s that have been invited. One day, the specific guest had to postpone his appearance - this will make some fans sad as they had filed their leaves prior to the date of his appearance (considering that even some still have work on the weekends).
Luckily, this was just a reschedule, but what if the guest did cancel his appearance? That will definitely take a toll on Bruce, as he has to cancel the guest's round-trip plane tickets, hotel bookings, so on and so forth. This also affects their ticket sales - so much that they can refund the visitors who paid for the concert just to see the guest.
The next course for Bruce is to fill in the void that the overseas guest has left. Luckily, he was able to fill in the void by getting more local jazz artists, and while the anticipation of the concert did went down, Bruce was able to position it to a different niche, delving more into showcasing the local jazz scene instead of having just one big jazz concert.
What visitors should understand about events organizing? There are sudden changes that can hurt the fans and the organizers altogether. Now, even if Bruce was able to mitigate a flop, what will happen in next year's event? They will go back from the drawing board, picking up the pieces from what has happened and then prepare the next format for another one.
Change is constant, and this is really reflected on the event industry, no matter where you go. This hard yet exhilarating events industry is truly wonderful.

Experience is the master of the game when it comes to satisfying the conference delegates that you are serving in your events.
However, there are times that common and small details are neglected by your team. These items are like matchsticks that trigger fast delegates anger. You don’t want furious delegates inside your event. It makes the hard work your team exerted during the pre-event preparation go down the drain.
Here are 7 Fast and Furious Errors that we must guard against to safeguard the amazing experience we wanted to give to our conference delegates.
Wrong Name in the Badge or ID
Nobody wants to have his name misspelled neither do you? But most of the time this is a common error that makes the conference delegates blood pressure rise-up.
Long Queues
We all hate long lines and spending long hours waiting for our turn in the registration area. This is the 21st Century and we have, in our hands, a lot of technology to solve this. Let us eliminate bad experience in our events by making this critical area seamless and fast.
Uneven Distribution of Sounds
Delegates hate this!
The technical rehearsals are for checking if the sounds are evenly distributed in the conference area. But there are cases where the front areas of the event have a loud sound, while at the back areas of the event you can barely hear what the speakers on the stage are saying.
You must always check the sound system and see to it that in all areas of the events the sound is crystal clear.
How can you learn if you cannot see what is being presented in the LED screens are so bright or so dim.
If you ask me, I will leave the conference hall even if the speaker is great (this is my subjective feeling).
The lesson here is you should always check if your video screens are friendly to the eye. The truth of the matter is that the eye is not only the window to the soul, but also the door to your delegates’ emotions.
Delayed Serving of Food
If lunch must be served from 12 noon, I can only tolerate a delay of 5 to 10 minutes. A delay more than this time, my impression of the conference or event will change from very good to a disaster.
You must remember that the food is an emotional issue with delegates. It is an element where organizers and events are always judged. A good food makes us emotionally inclined to give a high grade to the event.
Disrespectful Staff
You as an organizer is in the service industry, it is an automatic expectation that all your staff is service oriented – be it an in-house or outsource staff, there are no excuses.
A lot of times, I observed that what irks or provokes a delegate for becoming belligerent is because of a staff not trained to answer respectfully.
Event staff that answers back to a complaining delegate is a recipe for major complaints and unhappiness of delegates.
Humidity in the Venue
I attended a conference that makes me feel I am part of Dante’s Inferno. You must understand that a nice learning event is boosted by the right coolness of the place. The delegates must not feel too cold or too hot. The right temperature promotes the learning environment, it aids in keeping the delegates focus on the number one reason why they attended – to learn and enrich their knowledge.

In this age of technology, real conversation still triumphs.
Real conversation, face-to-face conversation is powerful and meaningful
compared to a gamut of social apps presented in front of us.
The question now is where in a conference or event do you
start a conversation? I know for beginners who are socially challenged or
afraid to start a conversation may find it daunting, it is like climbing Mt.
Everest, battling the different elements like the weather. I know I am
beginning to sound like overacting, but I talked to some who are challenged in
this exciting game of networking or for me the social art of knowing and
creating new friends and business partners, and their description fit climbing
the tough Mt. Everest or worst than this.
However, no worries, here are 5 Success Spots in Events or
Conferences where you can start a great conversation and on your way to a
successful networking.
Cocktail Tables
I love cocktail tables I feel that these tables are set-up to
encourage light conversations. You can approach a loner or two people at this
table and strike a conversation. In fact, you can hop in different cocktail
tables and by the time you have moved around, you may find in your pocket a lot
of business cards and special people that can help you further your success.
Food Area
In a buffet area, while you are lining-up to get your food,
you can strike a conversation with the people in front or at your back. You can
talk about the food in the buffet area, and before you know it you already won
a friend or a potential business partner.
Conference Table
(Banquet Tables)
In some conferences, your location is already predetermined.
At our events, we do this in order for people to get know other people from
other companies and expand their network. If you happened to be assigned or
decided to pick the table where you will spend most of the time in the learning
event, make the most of it. Strike a conversation.
In a banquet table, there are 10 to 11 people that you can
potentially know. Do not miss this great opportunity to know them. Start a
conversation and exchange business cards. I always move around on the tables
that I am assigned and give my business cards to all the people at that table. I
always notice that after the exchanged of business cards, the barriers to
communication are gone. I can talk to them freely and they talk to me like we
knew each other for a long time. I think their fear of rejection was
removed and so was mine making the conversation within the assigned table
successful.
Exhibit Area
During the breaks people go around the exhibit area to talk to
suppliers. You should use this area to spot people that you feel you want to
know and exchange business cards. Conversation starter could be by saying hi or
asking the person what is his opinion about the products or services in the
exhibit area.
Registration Area
Yes, this is a bit of a stretch. But there are cases where a
situation presents itself that you can start a conversation in this area.
Consider this, you may give a compliment to her or his dress before he or she
enters the conference area. In addition, some people stay here, and are not yet
interested to go inside the plenary area; it is your opportunity to approach
them. Just say hi as you approach him or her and no doubt a great conversation
will follow.

starting a great conversation on your way to expanding your network.

An event management company operates like other companies.
It has the production department, the accounting department, HR department,
sales and marketing department and other departments depending on the size and
need of an event management company.
Most of the times, applicants in our company think that they
will all end-up in the production or operation department. Those that did not specify their career goal
while applying end-up surprised and frustrated when they are assigned to other
departments.
Again, you can be part of an event management company, and
yet not be a part of events your company is implementing.
