4 Steps on How to Start a Successful Event Management Company in the Philippines
Monday, August 11, 2014
This Sunday when it was supposed to be my lazy day I was
invited as one of the panelists in the radio show titled: Stepping-Out, at
Radio Uno 153khz. The show is all about success stories of individuals in all
walks of life.
As I was listening to Dave, one of the panelists, what he
said caught my attention and as I reflected on his statement it makes sense
that this can be applied to aspiring event management professionals or
entrepreneurs wanting to start their own event management companies.
Here are his tips that we
also applied in making our event management company a success story.
Exlinkevents is already on it’s 13th year this 2014 and it is good
to know that listening to others you discover how you are able to make things
happen.
Yes sometimes you learn how
to name things that you are already doing for a long time from other people. It
is like while you are doing this in practice, others have the theory or concept
of what you are doing.
So here are the 4 steps to
starting a successful event management company:
1. DESIRE is defined as a strong feeling of wanting to have something or
wishing for something to happen.
This is a
strong feeling that will keep you awake at night and will make you feel incomplete
unless you make a move to make it happen.
It is what
some of the applicants I interviewed tell me that since college they have that strong desire to be part of the event management
industry.
I know who
have fire in their eyes and who are faking when they say this statement. The
reason is because when I decided that this is also what I want the desire
within me is so much it almost burned me.
2. LEARN
“The more
that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more
places you'll go.”
- Dr. Seuss,
Your desire is not enough to
start a successful event management company. You must learn the details of
starting an event management company by reading books, by attending seminars,
and by dirtying you hands that means entering an event management company as a
staff.
In the event management
industry the barrier to entry is small but the risk of failure is high.
So learn as much as you can.
I have been in this industry but I still attend seminars, read books and go
abroad to learn new things and validate my old knowledge in this industry. It
is dynamic and one can never stop learning to stay in front of the competition.
3. PLAN
“A goal
without a plan is just a wish.” ― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Although this is not the
famous line the author of the Little Prince has but this is one of the most
powerful lines that he shared.
Truth is if you do not have
a plan on how to start or when to start your event management company then it
is just a wish.
Without a plan, you will be
forever living in the Someday Island, which means you will always say someday I
will start my event management company to other people, until you have lost the
energy to actually start your own event management company.
4.
IMPLEMENT
Now that you have the
burning desire, the sufficient know-how and the plan it is time to implement
the plan.
Implementation is the true
test of your strong desire. If you can make things happen then you belong in
this industry.
Event management is all
about making things happen. This is the reason why I am madly in love with this
industry. It is all about bringing ideas to life.
One caveat, again this is a
risky industry. If you cannot handle the risk but your desire is geared towards
this industry you can start as part of one of the existing event management companies
in the Philippines.
There is such a thing as an
INTRAPRENEUR. It is an employee that thinks like an entrepreneur in performing
his functions in the organization.
If your superiors see you as
one, you can be handling high-level projects that will hone your skills and
confidence. After that it is up to you whether to start your own company or
just continue helping and building your career in the organization.
Good luck and see you at the
top!
