3 Event Management Lessons of Edsa People Power Revolution | Event Management Philippines

Thursday, February 25, 2016

The 30th Edsa People Power Revolution Anniversary is being celebrated today. The event that the whole world saw last 1986 was a very important and meaningful event for Filipinos and the people around the world who love freedom and democracy.

But besides the importance of Edsa People Power Revolution in the Pantheon of World History, event managers and the event management industry can learn a lot of important lessons in this momentous event. Here are three lessons for event managers:

The Power of Leadership

The event gained ground when then Cardinal Jaime Sin called the People to go out on the streets and support Juan Ponce Enrile and Fidel Ramos, two of Marcos Military Officers bolted-out of his administration, and declared that they have enough of Marcos corrupt leadership and dictatorship.

A leadership that has credibility and respect will get a solid following. People follow a leader that they believe and their belief is rooted on the good examples and the conduct of the leader.

Event Managers can use this lesson to generate the same enthusiastic results. Event Managers must have credibility and exude respect, with these two elements, he can always command his event management staff and volunteers and produce outstanding results.

The Power of Unity

The Edsa People Power Revolution showed how sweet Unity is. In this historical event, people from the left, right and center of the political spectrum are unified in toppling the Marcos Dictatorship.

There is one goal that unified everybody and because of this the power of unity worked tremendously in achieving this gargantuan goal.

Event Managers can learn from this, unity can be achieved by establishing clear goals or a Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) as describe by management gurus James Collins and Jerry Porras.

Often times, this is where event managers fail and events fail, the failure to establish clear goals where everyone involved in the event can focus and direct their efforts and energy.

The Power of Prayer

Prayer moved mountains and it is in full display in the Edsa People Power Revolution. The nuns leading the people praying in front of tanks and heavily armed soldier is a very powerful image of how prayers can defeat violence

The image of a gun’s nozzle having a flower is a very historical image of how prayers can do miraculous results.

In the face of an overwhelming odd, event managers can use the power of prayers in order to turn a difficult situation into the events favor.

It is mind boggling that despite the heavy pre-event planning, some things go awry.

This is the reason why we respect Murphy’s Law, “ Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” This is the reason why we have palpitations and trepidations before the event begins.

Indeed, when we have done all we can do to ensure success before the event, the last thing events managers must do is pray and call for the blessings of the universe and supreme being.
